Enfield, Middlesex
Enfield is a large town in Middlesex. The town grew up from the Middle Ages around St Andrew's church, which dates at least as far back as 1136. Enfield was granted a charter to hold a weekly market and two annual fairs by Edward I in 1303. The larger town of Enfield grew up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as suburban development around the town and its surrounding villages coalesced. From 1894-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish of Enfield was the basis of Enfield urban district (municipal borough from 1955). The town is within the council area of Enfield.
