Ellesmere Port, Cheshire
Ellesmere Port is a port town in Cheshire, on the south-eastern edge of the Wirral peninsula. Formerly known as Netherpool, the area became known as the Port of Ellesmere following the siting of the outlet of the Ellesmere Canal to the River Mersey there. By the early 19th century it was known as Ellesmere Port. The town grew around the docks. As well as a service sector economy, the town has retained large industries including the Stanlow oil refinery. The town is within the council area of Cheshire West and Chester.
