Ellesmere, Shropshire
Ellesmere is a small market town in Shropshire. The town sits on the bank of 'The Mere', one of the largest natural lakes in England outside the Lake District and one of nine glacial meres in the area. The Mere is popular with birdwatchers. Only the earthworks remain of Ellesmere Castle, an 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle overlooking the Mere. The town is within the council area of Shropshire.
