Elephant and Castle, Surrey

Elephant and Castle is an urban area in the metropolitan district of Newington, Surrey. The area lies around the major junction where the Roman road Stane Street (Newington Causeway) is crossed by the New Kent Road, in the centre of Newington. The name is derived from a public house located at this junction since around 1760. Before the era of motor traffic, the junction was a popular place to socialise, shop and be entertained. The area suffered major damage in the Second World War. It is within the council area of Southwark.
