Eleanor Cross, Hertfordshire

The Eleanor Cross (aka the Waltham Cross) is one of the three surviving Eleanor crosses, this one located at Waltham Cross (named from the cross), Hertfordshire. The Eleanor crosses were memorials completed before the end of 1294 commemorating the over-night resting places of the coffin of Eleanor of Castile, wife of King Edward I, on its processional journey from Lincoln to Westminster Abbey in 1290. The cross here was built in about 1291 by Roger of Crundale and Nicholas Dymenge. It probably became known as Waltham Cross because it stood at the way to Waltham Abbey, across the River Lea in Essex. It is within the council area of Broxbourne (Hertfordshire).
