Eglinton, Londonderry

Eglinton is a large village, lying on the River Muff in County Londonderry. It lies primarily within the townland of Muff, in the civil parish of Faughanvale. The village, originally named Muff or the Muff, was founded in 1619 by the Grocers' Company of London. In 1858, the residents of the village resolved to change the name to Eglinton in honour of the then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the 13th Earl of Eglinton. The current Church of Ireland parish church of Faughanvale St Canice dates from 1821. It replaced the first parish church (1626), which stands in ruins alongside it. Faughanvale Presbyterian Church was built in 1894. The Erasmus Smith schoolhouse dates from 1814. Foyle Park House was built in 1813 by David Babington. The village saw large-scale housing developments in the 20th and 21st centuries. The village is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
