Eel Pie Island, Middlesex

Eel Pie Island is a settlement on the island of the same name, on the River Thames at Twickenham, Middlesex. The island itself was formerly known as Twickenham Ait, the current name supposedly deriving from Eel-Pie House a refreshment house formerly at the island's centre. The Eel Pie Island Hotel had a colourful history from its opening in 1930 until it burnt down in 1971, including in its last days as a large hippy commune. The island now has about 50 homes, some small businesses and artists' studios. It is within the council area of Richmond upon Thames.
