Edmonton, Middlesex

Edmonton is a town in the north-west of Middlesex. Edmonton is recorded in Domesday as 'Adelmetone'. It developed as a village along Ermine Street. By the early 19th century it was a large village with twin nuclei: one around The Green and All Saints' Church (Lower Edmonton), the other (Upper Edmonton) to the south around the crossroads of Fore Street with Silver Street/Watery Lane. The coming of the railway and tramway saw Edmonton expand to become an industrial town. It became a major shopping destination in the 1930s. From 1894-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish of Edmonton formed the basis of Edmonton urban district (a municipal borough from 1937). All Saints' Church is first recorded in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th century. The town is within the council area of Enfield.
