Edington Priory, Wiltshire

Edington Priory is a ruined priory in Edington, Wiltshire. It was founded by William Edington, the bishop of Winchester, in 1351 in his home village. At the Dissolution the house was peacefully dissolved and the brothers given pensions for life. Most of its estates were obtained by Sir Thomas Seymour. The priory church, consecrated in 1361, continues in use as the parish church of Saint Mary, Saint Katharine and All Saints. Two large rectangular gardens enclosed by walls may reflect the layout of the monastic precinct. A late mediæval house, The Priory, may incorporate parts of the monastic buildings. A 16th-century cottage named The Monastery Garden is built into a stretch of the priory wall. The site is within the council area of Wiltshire.
