Edenderry, Armagh

Edenderry is a an urban area, lying on the east bank of the River Bann in Portadown, County Armagh. It is within the townland of Edenderry, in the civil parish of Seagoe. The first stone bridge across the River Bann at Portadown was commenced in 1763 but earlier wooden bridges had existed since at least 1642. By the early 19th century there was a significant settlement on the east bank of the Bann in Edenderry townland. The area grew substantially in the 19th century, with the development of the weaving industry along the river and the arrival of the railway in 1842. The first Presbyterian meeting house in Portadown was built in Edenderry in 1816-1822. The current First Presbyterian Church was built on the same site in 1858. The area is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
