Edenderry, Down

Edenderry is a small village, lying on the east bank of the River Laggan in County Down. It is within the townland of Edenderry, in the civil parish of Drumbo. In 1866, linen manufacturer John Shaw Brown acquired the Edenderry flour mill beside the Lagan and developed the site as the St Ellen Works weaving factory. Shaw developed the village itself on higher ground above the factory. Though the linen industry declined from the 1970s, the village retains many features of its 19th-century mill village origins. The village is within the council area of Belfast.
