Eccles, Lancashire

Eccles is a town in Lancashire, on the north bank of the River Irwell (now the Manchester Ship Canal). The town grew around the 13th-century Parish Church of St Mary. During the 19th century, it became a centre for textiles. Eccles cakes were first produced and sold in Eccles in 1793, from a shop owned by James Birch. Eccles Library (1907) was funded by Andrew Carnegie and designed by Edward Potts. Eccles Town Hall (1881) was designed in the Edwardian Baroque style and built in red brick. The town is within the council area of Salford.
