Ebbingford Manor, Cornwall

Ebbingford Manor is a historic house near Bude, Cornwall. The manor is argued to be Bude's oldest building. The earliest recorded development in the area took place around Efford or Ebbingford Manor which was created in 1184. In 1400 the Exeter Ecclesiastical Records refer to a chapel of St Leonard which formed part of the manor complex. From 1410 until 1768 Efford Manor was held by the Arundells of Trerice who owned the land to the south of the River Neet. The manor was then rebuilt in the late 16th century. The core of the house is the mediæval hall, though this has been rather altered. Tudor work is seen in two chimney stacks, the square mullioned windows and panelling which survives in the dining room. In 1758, the house was refashioned in Georgian style by the addition of six sash windows to the front and two brick chimney stacks. In 1802, Ebbingford Manor passed to Sir Thomas Dyke Acland of Killerton who set about a considerable programme of works. In 1848, Sir Thomas Acland gave the manor for the vicarage and a chapel was made in the stable block. More recent alterations and modernisation took place in 1904. In 1934 the Revd FCC Atkin rebuilt the chapel, known as St. Leonard's Chapel, at Ebbingford which was being used as a vicarage. During World War Two, St Leonard's Chapel was used as a 'lock up' or Calaboose for any American troops arrested for fighting. More alterations took place in the 1950s, when the property was bought by Dudley Stamp. The house is within the council area of Cornwall.
