Eastbourne is a town and seaside resort in Sussex. Though 'Borne' is mentioned in Domesday, by the 19th century the area comprised four hamlets: Eastbourne, Southbourne, Meads and Sea Houses. The railway arrived in 1849. Landowner William Cavendish embarked on creating a resort built "for gentlemen by gentlemen". It became a municipal borough in 1883. The focus of tourism is the four miles of shingle beach, lined with a seafront of hotels, guest houses and attractions. Eastbourne Pier opened in 1872. The town is within the council area of Eastbourne (East Sussex).
