East Ham, Essex

East Ham is a town in Essex. East Ham was an ancient parish formed to serve the eastern parts of the older (Saxon-era) Manor of Ham. Until the late 19th century, the parish remained rural with the small village of East Ham around St John's Church in its centre. In 1859 East Ham railway station opened and thereafter the area became increasingly suburbanised. From 1915-1965, for local government purposes, the parish was the basis of East Ham county borough. East Ham Town Hall (1903) was designed by Henry Cheers and Joseph Smith in the Renaissance style. The town is within the council area of Newham.
