Easington Colliery is a former mining town in County Durham, to the east of Easington. The town began when the pit was sunk in 1899. Alongside the pit was developed a new community of shops, pubs and rows of terraced houses. There was a major mine disaster in 1951, sometimes called the Duckbill or Duck Bills Flare, in which 83 men lost their lives. The mine closed in 1993. The town is within the council area of County Durham.
