MenuDunston, Durham
Dunston is a former village which is now an area of Gateshead, County Durham, located on the south bank of the River Tyne. Dunston was first mentioned in 1328. Salmon fishing and farming were important industries from at least the 14th century. Later, the proximity of the river aided the development of large-scale coal mining in the village. By the river are Dunston Staiths which date back to 1893 and are reputedly the largest wooden structure in Europe. Dunston is within the council area of Gateshead.
