Dunstable is a market town in Bedfordshire, adjacent to the border with Hertfordshire. It lies on the eastward tail spurs of the Chiltern Hills. The town, Roman in origin, stands where two ancient routes cross; Watling Street and the Icknield Way. The oldest part of the town is along the Icknield Way and Watling Street. The southern suburbs of California, Stipers Hill and Downside lie in Hertfordshire. The town is within the council area of Central Bedfordshire.
