Dunluce Castle, Antrim
Dunluce Castle is a ruined mediæval castle, located on the edge of a basalt outcropping on the coast of County Antrim, in the townland of Dunluce. In the 13th century, Richard Óg de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster, built the first castle at Dunluce. It was first documented to be in the hands of the McQuillan family in 1513. The earliest features of the castle are two large drum towers about 30 ft in diameter on the eastern side, both relics of the stronghold built here by the McQuillans. The castle was seized by the MacDonnell clan in the 1550s, who set about stamping their mark on the castle under the leadership of the famous warrior chieftain Sorely Boy MacDonnell. The castle was abandoned because of the impoverishment of the MacDonnells in 1690, following the Battle of the Boyne. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Causeway Coast and Glens.
