Dungannon, Tyrone
Dungannon is a town in County Tyrone. The older parts of the town are within the townland of Drumcoo. In the 20th and 21st centuries the town has spread into the townlands of Lisnahull, Ballysaggart, Mullaghanagh, Ballynorthland Demesne, Gortmerron, Killymeal and Mullaghadun. The town is within the civil parishes of Drumglass and Donaghmore. Until the 17th century, Dungannon was the O'Neill clan's main stronghold. In the 14th century the O'Neills built a castle on what is now known as Castle Hill. After the O'Neills' defeat in the Nine Years' War, the English founded a Plantation town on the site, which grew into what is now Dungannon. A linen centre in the 19th century, it became a centre for food processing in the late 20th. The town is within the council area of Mid Ulster.
