Dundonald, Down

Dundonald is a large suburban village in County Down. It is within the townlands of Church Quarter, Ballyregan, Ballyoran, Ballybeen, Ballylisbredan and Carrowreagh, in the civil parish of Dundonald. The first settlement here was a Norman motte castle built by John de Courcy around 1177, the remains of which stand as Moat Hill (or "the Moat") in Moat Park. The current St Elizabeth's Church (C of I) was built in 1966, though its predecessor, dating from 1624, still stands nearby. There is thought to have been a church here since Anglo-Norman times. In the graveyard stands the Cleland Mausoleum, erected in 1842 by Eliza Cleland in memory of husband, Samuel Jackson Cleland, and visible from their home at Storm Mount. The current Dundonald Presbyterian Church dates from 1834, though the congregation dates back to the mid 17th century. At the start of the 20th century, Dundonald remained a small village at the crossroads near the churches and motte. Since the mid 20th century this area, still known as "the Village", has been surrounded by large-scale urban and sub-urban developments, to the extent that many now consider Dundonald to be a suburban town and an eastern suburb of Belfast. It is within the council area of Lisburn and Castlereagh.
