Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire

Dumbarton is the county town of Dunbartonshire. It stands on the north bank of the River Clyde where the River Leven flows into the Clyde estuary. The Rock of Dumbarton stands on the shore here, a grand, steep rock on whose height the town was first founded. Dumbarton Castle, sits now in the cleavage of Dumbarton Rock, commanding the Clyde. The town is within the council area of West Dunbartonshire.
