Dudley is a large market town in the Black Country. Though locally in Staffordshire, most of the town lies within the Dudley exclave of Worcestershire. It is listed in Domesday as 'Dudelei'. Dudley Castle dates from 1070, the present structure being built in the 13th century. Dudley was one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution and grew into a major industrial centre with its iron, coal, and limestone industries. Dudley Zoo (opened 1937) is within the ground of the castle. The town is within the council area of Dudley.
