Dromore Motte, Down

Dromore Motte is an Anglo-Norman motte and bailey castle, located in a bend of the River Lagan, commanding the valley, in the town of Dromore, County Down. The motte is 40ft high, with a rectangular bailey to the south, separated by a ditch which is continuous with that enclosing the bailey. On the sides away from the bailey, the motte is further defended by an outer bank and ditch, separated by a wide berm from the inner ditch. The motte has a rectangular summit surrounded by a bank beneath which a timber palisade was discovered through excavation. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
