Dromore, Down
Dromore is a small market town, lying on the River Laggan in County Down. It is within the townland of Ballymaganlis, in the civil parish of Dromore. The current Dromore Cathedral dates from the mid 17th century, but stands on the site of a church and monastery reputed to have been founded by St Colman in the 6th century. Sir John de Courcy built a motte and bailey castle ("the Mound") by the Laggan in the early 13th century. Though on an ancient settlement, the town largely dates from the re-founding of the Diocese of Dromore by James I in 1610. The town's economy was based around the linen industry from the mid 17th century. Dromore Town Hall (1886), in the Market Square, was designed in the Victorian style in red brick. St Colman's Church (RC) dates from 1873, replacing a Mass House of 1782. The town is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
