Downpatrick, Down

Downpatrick is a town, lying on the Lecale peninsula in County Down. It is primarily within the townland of Demesne Of Down Acre, in the civil parish of Down. The area, south of the River Quoile, has been the site of continuous human settlement since prehistoric times. Between the town and the river is The Mound of Down, considered to be pre-Norman and possibly a royal headquarters of the Dál Fiatach. Down Cathedral stands on Cathedral Hill overlooking the town. The present church dates from the early 19th century but it was built from the ruins of a monastery that dates back at least as far as the 12th century. In the grounds is the reputed burial place of St Patrick. St Margaret's Church (C of I), the parish church, was built in 1560 on the site of an earlier church. St Patrick's Church (RC) dates from 1872. The First Presbyterian (Non-Subscribing) Church dates from 1711. Downpatrick Courthouse (1735) was designed by Hugh Darling in the Neoclassical style, though substantially rebuilt after a fire in 1855. The town is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
