Dore Abbey, Herefordshire

Dore Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey and present-day parish church in Abbey Dore in the Golden Valley, Herefordshire. The abbey was founded in 1147 by Robert fitzHarold of Ewyas. The main complex of conventual buildings was erected between the mid-12th century and 1210. The abbey was suppressed in 1536 and the buildings rapidly fell into ruins. The church was restored in the 1630s by its owner John Scudmore, 1st Vicount Scudamore. The original mediæval altar was found in a nearby farm and returned to the church. The original nave was blocked off and a new tower erected, and a new carved oak rood screen was made by John Abel of Hereford. New stained glass was provided. The church was re-consecrated on 22 March 1634 and remains the parish church of Abbey Dore. Large parts of the 12th and 13th-century buildings, including the north and south transepts and the interior columns, together with some tiles, wooden fittings and fragments of stained glass, remain in place today, incorporated into the later church. The monument is within the council area of County of Herefordshire.
