Dore, Derbyshire
Dore is a large village in the north of Derbyshire. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 827 King Egbert of Wessex led his army to Dore to receive the submission of King Eanred of Northumbria, thereby establishing his overlordship over the whole of Anglo-Saxon Britain. The Dore Stone on the village green commemorates this. Christ Church dates from 1828. The area was brought within the Sheffield municipal area in 1934 and, although Dore has seen suburban development since then, it retains a village identity and is mostly surrounded by greenfields. It is within the council area of Sheffield.
