Doncaster, Yorkshire
Doncaster is a city in Yorkshire, in the West Riding. Doncaster is built on the site of a Roman fort which was constructed in the 1st century AD at a crossing of the River Don. It was later an Anglo-Saxon burgh. Its modern history, however, comes from the Industrial Revolution, in which it was a coal town and transport centre. St George's Minster was designed by George Gilbert Scott in the 1850s. Doncaster Racecourse has been the site of race meetings since the 16th century. The city is within the council area of Doncaster.
