Devonport, Devon

Devonport is a former town that is now a part of the larger city of Plymouth, Devon. Plymouth Dock began around 1700 as a small settlement to house workers employed on the naval base being developed on the River Tamar. The settlement grew alongside the dockyard, changing its name to Devonport in 1823 and becoming a municipal borough in 1837 and a county borough in 1889. The dockyard itself was renamed HM Dockyard, Devonport in 1843 (now His Majesty's Naval Base, Devonport). Devonport became part of the county borough of Plymouth in 1914. Devonport is within the council area of Plymouth.
