Devil's Dyke, Sussex
Devil's Dyke is a large univallate Iron Age hillfort near Poynings, Sussex. It is situated on a chalk spur which forms part of the Sussex Downs. The hillfort encloses an area of about 35 acres, and the interior is defended by a large bank up to about 50ft wide which rises to a height of about 10ft. The hillfort is a popular local beauty spot and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the site of a number of visitor attractions, including a steep grade railway and aerial cableway, which survive in ruined form and as earthworks. It is in the care of the National Trust. It is within the council area of Mid Sussex (West Sussex).
