Derventio Roman Fort, Cumberland
Derventio Roman Fort is located at Papcastle in Cumberland. Originally built in timber, it dates from about AD 80 to 120, and is overlain by the earthwork remains of a larger stone-built Roman fort dating from about AD 160 to the late 4th century. This was rebuilt in about AD 293-306. Much of the stonework of the fort above ground, and probably the township, was taken to build Cockermouth Castle in the 12th century. The site was inspected and surveyed during the production of 'Time Team', a television programme for Channel 4 in 1998. It is within the council area of Cumberland.
