Derby, Derbyshire

Derby is a city lying on the River Derwent in Derbyshire. Founded by the Danes from around 877, it was first record in old English as 'Deoraby'. It first received a royal charter around 1154. Initially a market town, from the mid 18th century it became an important site of porcelain manufacture. The city also became an important centre for silk, lace, cotton and textile manufacture. In the 19th century it became a centre of the railway industry. It remains a centre for advanced transport manufacturing. It is within the council area of Derby.
