Denny Abbey, Cambridgeshire

Denny Abbey is a former abbey near Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire. It was founded as a Benedictine abbey around 1150. In 1169 the site was transferred to the Knights Templar. In 1327 Edward III gave the Priory to a young widow, Marie de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke (1303-1377). She had a new church built and gave the remainder of the priory to the Franciscan Poor Clares. At the Dissolution, the Abbess's lodge was retained as a farmhouse, and the Refectory as a barn, but the nave was demolished. The site remained a farm until leased to the Minstry of Work in 1947. In 1997 it became the site of a farming museum. The site is within the council area of South Cambridgeshire (Cambridgeshire).
