De Beauvoir Town, Middlesex
De Beauvoir Town is a suburban area in the west of the metropolitan district of Hackney, Middlesex. The area was developed from the 1830s by landowner Richard de Beavoir. Occupied by the newly emerging middle classes, the estate was almost wholly residential. In the 1960s Hackney council demolished nearly a third of the original estate to build low- and high-rise flats. Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky visited De Beauvoir Town for the 5th Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1907, which was held at the Brotherhood Church on the corner of Southgate Road and Balmes Road. It is within the council area of Hackney.
