Dawlish, Devon
Dawlish is a resort town, lying at the mouth of the Dawlish Water on the south coast of Devon. The settlement is believed to have developed in Saxon times, around the site of the present Church of St Gregory (C of E), itself possibly on the site of a Saxon wooden church. Until the end of the 18th century, the economy was based around farming and fishing. From that time it was developed as a fashionable resort. The Dawlish Water was straightened and the seafront area landscaped. The railway arrived in 1846. Dawlish is known for its black swans, introduced from Western Australia in 1906. The town is within the council area of Teignbridge (Devon).
