Damolly, Down
Damolly is a former hamlet that is now a northern suburb of Newry, lying on the east bank of the Clanrye River in County Down. It is within the townland of Damolly, in the civil parish of Newry. The hamlet of Damolly (aka Damolly Row) grew alongside Damolly Mill, which operated on the River Clanrye from the mid 18th century until 1979. The mill started making spades and later was variously a corn mill, flax-scutching, spinning mill, weaving, and finally a carpet making concern. Aside from the hamlet, the townland of Damolly remained almost entirely rural until the mid 20th century. Since then the west of the townland has been developed as a northern suburb of Newry. The area is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
