Dalton Castle, Lancashire

Dalton Castle is a 14th-century peel tower in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire. A rectangular tower, it was built in the early 14th century on the site of an earlier stronghold. The story goes that a raid by Scots caused such damage to lands owned by powerful Furness Abbey that the abbot decided that a strong defensive structure was necessary. After the dissolution of Furness Abbey in 1537, the castle continued as a courthouse for over 300 years, owned at first by the Crown and then by the Dukes of Albermarle, the Dukes of Montagu, and finally the Dukes of Buccleuch. After the Castle was obtained by the National Trust from the Duke of Buccleuch, major restoration took place in 1968/69. The castle is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
