Dalston, Middlesex

Dalston is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in the west of the metropolitan district of Hackney, Middlesex. The earliest reference, to 'Derleston', is from 1294. The hamlet developed to the west of Kingsland, along the road (now Dalston Lane) between Ermine Street and the village of Hackney. It remained a rural hamlet into the 19th century. By 1849, it was described as a "recently increased suburban village, with some handsome old houses". By the late 19th century it had become a part of the larger built-up area of Hackney. St Marks' Church (1864) was designed by Chester Cheston. The area is within the council area of Hackney.
