Dally Castle, Northumberland
Dally Castle is a ruined 13th-century rectangular, defensible stone hall house in Northumberland. The castle is believed to have been built by David de Lindsay in 1237. The castle was then confiscated in 1289 and handed to John de Swinburne in 1293 to finish building work, and then to the Crown in 1323 on Roberts death. In 1326 a raid by the Scots across the border into England saw the manor pillaged and tower burnt down. In 1604 the ruins were occupied by the Dodds family as tenants to the Crown. In 1605 the castle was is given to George Home, Earl of Dunbar. Then in 1611 Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk, obtains the castle through marriage and by the 1660s the castle was sold to the Charltons family. A roofless ruin in the 18th century, most of its masonry had been taken by the early 19th century. The walls are visible standing to a maximum height of 6 feet. Further columns and other architectural fragments were also uncovered and remain at the site. It is within the council area of Northumberland.
