Dale Abbey, Derbyshire

Dale Abbey is a ruined Premonstratensian religious house at Dale, Derbyshire. Dale Abbey was founded in 1204 from Newsham Abbey in Lincolnshire. The chronicle of the abbey, which dates from the mid-13th century, gives a detailed prehistory involving the hermit of the nearby rock-cut hermitage. The Dissolution brought an end to almost four centuries of monastic life in the Dale. The remains comprise a 40-foot-high chancel window. Excavations have shown the church to have possessed transepts 100 feet in length, a crossing tower, a cloister 85 feet square and a nave of unknown length. The Church of All Saints and its adjoining farmhouse may be the abbey's infirmary and its chapel. The monument is within the council area of Erewash (Derbyshire).
