Dagenham, Essex

Dagenham is a town in Essex. It is listed as 'Dæccanhaam' in the charter for Barking Abbey 666. The ancient parish of Dagenham was formed in the mediæval period from part of the manor of Barking. The church of St Peter and St Paul dates from the 13th century, though the tower collapsed in 1800 and the church largely rebuilt. Though Dagenham remained a rural village into the 20th century, it was rapidly hemmed in to the south by industrial development on Dagenham Marshes, especially with the opening of the Ford Motor Company’s factory in 1931, and to the north and west by the huge Becontree estate form the 1920s. From 1926-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish of Dagenham was the basis for Dagenham urban district, a municipal borough from 1938. The Cross Keys is a 15th-century timber-framed public house. Valence House (once the town hall, now a museum) dates back to the 13 century. The town is within the council area of Barking and Dagenham.
