Dacre Hall is a historic village hall in Lanercost, Cumberland. Dacre Hall is reputed to be the oldest village hall in England and forms part of the Lanercost Priory, set in the Irthing valley, close to Hadrian’s Wall. The Priory buildings were all completed by 1169. Edward I resided there and reputedly Elizabeth I ascended to the throne while staying at the Priory. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Thomas Dacre converted the priory's west cloister range into a private dwelling. In 1559, Dacre constructed a 100 foot great hall with large windows and a fireplace on the first floor. This is the building that is now known as Dacre Hall. Further alterations were made in the early 19th century. The Hall remained in the Dacre family until the early 18th century, and was later purchased by the Earl of Carlisle in the 19th century. It was also converted to a church hall in the 20th century. Dacre Hall now serves as Lanercost Village Hall, and can be hired for use by local clubs, for weddings, celebrations, exhibitions and performances. It is within the council area of Cumberland.
