Culmore, Londonderry
Culmore is a suburban village, lying on the west bank of the River Foyle, at the river's mouth, in County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Culmore, in the civil parish of Templemore. Until the late 20th century, the dwellings within the townland of Culmore were dispersed, with many, including the hamlet of Tullyarden, spread along the main Londonderry to Muff road (A2) and others along the waterfront near Culmore Point. Culmore Fort was built on Culmore Point in the early 17th century, controlling access to the River Foyle. It was rebuilt as a tower house in the early 19th century. The Holy Trinity Church (C of I) is a Gothic Revival style church dating from 1866. Nearby are the ruins of an earlier church, reputed to be a garrison church for Culmore Fort. The southern part of the townland saw large-scale housing development from the late 20th century, creating a larger suburban area usually known by the townland name of Culmore. The village is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
