MenuCrossgar, Down
Crossgar is a large village, lying on the Glasswater River in County Down. It is within the townland of Crossgar, in the civil parish of Kilmore. Landowner Edward Ruthven built Crossgar House around 1780. During the 1820s, Ruthven sold the house to William Thompson, who developed the village itself and built the Market House (1829). Thompson's nephew and heir, James Cleland, demolished the house around 1862 and had Tobat Mhuire (Mary's Well) built, named after a holy well south-west of the new house. In 1950 the house and estate were sold to the Passionist Order. St Joseph’s Church (RC) was completed in 1870 on the site of an older church erected in 1800. Lissara Presbyterian Church opened in 1867. The village is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
