Cross and Hand, Dorset

Cross and Hand is a wayside cross, located at the boundary between the parishes of Sydling St Nicholas and Batcombe in Dorset. The cross includes a monolithic oval shaft with a crudely carved collar and larger rounded head. The hand, said to have been carved on one face, is no longer traceable. The cross may belong to the group of pre-Conquest shafts of which the pillar of Eliseg, said to be 6th century in date, is the best known. The cross was described by Hardy in Tess of the D'Urbevilles as a 'strange rude monolith'. The monument is within the council area of Dorset.
Historic England Scheduled Monument 1015041.
