Crewe, Cheshire
Crewe is a railway town in Cheshire. It was recorded in Domesday as Creu. It remained a village until the Grand Junction Railway company chose Crewe as the site for its locomotive works (Crewe Works) and railway station in the late 1830s. The town was laid out in 1843 by Joepsh Locke to consolidate the settlement that had grown up around Crewe Station (opened 1837). Crewe Works continues to produce locomotive engines. The Lyceum Theatre dates from 1911. The Jacobean mansion Crewe Hall is located to the east of the town. The town is within the council area of Cheshire East.
