Creggan, Londonderry

Creggan is an urban area in the west of Londonderry, County Londonderry. It is within the townlands of Edenballymore and Ballymagowan, in the civil parish of Templemore. The estate was built from the late 1940s on open land on the south side of the Creggan Burn and Creggan Reservoirs. From its inception, the estate was predominantly populated by Catholic families, rehoused from the central part of the city. From the 1960s, Creggan became a major centre of nationalist unrest, was part of the Free Derry area from 1969-1972 and continued to be deeply affected throughout the Troubles. The Creggan Rath in is an ancient, large circular earthwork (a "ringfort") likely dating to the Early Christian period. The singer Dana grew up on the Creggan estate. The Creggan estate should not be confused with the hamlet of Creggan, which lies north of the burn in Creggan townland. The area is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
