Cregagh, Down

Cregagh is a former village that is now urban area, usually now considered a south-eastern suburb of Belfast, County Down. It is within the townlands of Cregagh and Ballymaconaghy, in the civil parish of Knockbreda. The townlands of Cregagh and Ballymaconaghy remained rural until the early 20th century. A settlement of 'Cregagh' developed from then at the intersection of the townlands at the end of the tramway down the Cregagh Road. From the late 1940s developed happened apace further north along the Cregagh Road. The footballer George Best grew up on Burren Way. Prior to 2015 the area was part of Castlereagh district and is often considered part of a broader Castlereagh area. It became part of Belfast Council area in 2015. It is within the council area of Belfast.
