Crayford, Kent

Crayford is a town in Kent. It lies where the Roman road Watling Street crosses the River Cray and is sometimes proposed as the site of the Roman settlement of Noviomagus. It was certainly a sizeable settlement at the time of Domesday. The town became industrialised in the 19th century, becoming a notable centre for armaments manufacture. From 1920-1965, for local government purposes, the town was the basis of Crayford urban district. Crayford Town Hall (1915) is built in red brick in the Queen Anne style. Crayford Manor House dates from the Middle Ages but was substantially remodelled in 1816. St Paulinus Church dates from around 1100. The town is within the council area of Bexley.
